The Swiss designer Hans Bellmann was a student at the Bauhaus from 1931 to 1933 where he met Ludvig Mies van der Rohe. After graduating, Bellmann was hired by Mies to work as an architect in his studio, a job that he kept for two years, before establishing his own Zurich-based studio in 1946.
From his studio he began to explore furniture design. True to his modernist training, Bellmann designed furniture with a focus on structure and simplicity. His designs, sold by the Swiss modernist retailer Wohnbedarf, included two Tripod Tables, which Knoll imported in 1948.
Bellmann taught throughout his career and was on the faculty at both Harvard University and Washington University in Seattle.
